For Black History Month 2022 Puffer Reds looks to spread awareness on our local heroes who not only made a difference here in Washtenaw County, Michigan but took their influence nationwide. Charles Eugene Beatty was an Ypsilanti Educator and partner on the HighScope Perry Preschool Study. This study changed early childhood education forever, and eventually led to the formation of the HighScope Foundation, which is located in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Mr. Beatty was the first full-time African-American Principal in the state of Michigan, starting his tenure at Harriet Street School (now known as Perry Early Learning Center). Beatty was a graduate of Detroit Northeastern High School, and Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University). While attending college Beatty was a decorated track and field athlete and competed in the try-outs for the 1932 Olympics.
Mr. Beatty's focus on early childhood education led him to becoming a partner in the landmark HighScope Perry Preschool Study which was conducted from 1962-1967. The study, led by psychologist Dr. David Weikart was possible due to the dedication of Mr. Beatty, and studied the impact of early childhood education on 123 African-American children. When the HighScope Educational Research Foundation was established in 1970, Mr. Beatty's mark on education was cemented in history.
